About the Directory
The Downtown Directory began as a single broadsheet pinned to the wall of a hotel lobby — a list of the printers, attorneys, dining rooms and lodging houses a traveler might need before sundown. A century on, the assignment has not changed.
We catalogue the businesses that animate America's downtowns: the accountants on the third floor, the bookkeeping shop above the druggist, the diner that opens at four, the loft that just came up for lease. We list them plainly, photograph them honestly, and keep the entries current.
The Directory accepts no fee for inclusion. Listings are curated by section editors and verified by the bureau. If you believe your downtown is under-represented, write to us — we'll send a correspondent.
